CHAPTER COORDINATOR’S MESSAGE

What a wonderful time of the year, the leaves are starting to change color, and the temperature is perfect, do take time to enjoy each day. One can’t help but remember where we were last year this time, let’s count our blessings and remember all those that haven’t been as fortunate. I like to reflect on the kindness of so many people during that trying period. We received just under 2,000 blankets from folks all over the country. Many came from other Project Linus chapters, but many arrived from quilt guilds and just individuals. I remember meeting a young man in the parking lot of Jacksons Western Store he had been out West visiting family and saw the mother of an old girlfriend who had a quilt shop, she loaded his car with quilts and once in WNC he tracked me down to do the delivery. Among all the heartache we do have wonderful memories.

APPLE & SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE

A special event is planned for October 18 to celebrate each of you who made it possible to reach an outstanding milestone. We have given out over 100,000 blankets in WNC since this chapter was started by Barbara Robinson in 1998. Attached you will find the invitation, and I hope that you will take the time to check your calendar and then call or email to make a reservation.

BLANKET SIZES

I want to call your attention to the sizes of the blankets that this chapter receives requests for. We are receiving many that we are unable to pass on to the facilities. We can’t use the smaller sizes, as the facilities do not want them. They find that the medium and larger sizes better serve their needs. So, if you are someone who has been turning in the small blankets, I am asking if you will find another avenue for them or better yet add another skein of yarn and please make them bigger. If you still wish to make one of the small sizes, then please make a medium and a large to be turned in with it. If your yarn of choice is thick yarn we can’t use these as a “small”, it is too heavy for a small child.

If you are purchasing fleece from us the fabric has already been cut to the proper size (1 ½ yards). Do not cut this fleece to make two blankets. If you cut it down the middle it looks like a table runner and not a blanket hug, if you cut it smaller, we can’t pass it on.

                                                                      Small:         35” x 45” and up

Medium:    40” x 50” and up

Large:         45” x 60” and up

SEWING ON PROJECT LINUS LABELS

When sewing on a Project Linus label you’re the first line of quality control. Check the quality of the donation and feel the edges of a quilt to make sure that a pin is not lurking somewhere.

                                                                MONTHLY WORK SESSIONS

We are still meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden. We are meeting from 1:00 until 3:00 Ish. We do not work on making blankets but process all those that have been received during the month, getting them ready for distribution. We would love to have you join us. During this time, we have donated articles for you to pick up.

We now have a table with fleece and batting available for $3.00 apiece. The batting is precut, in pieces “60” x “90” and the fleece is 60” x 54”.  This is a huge savings from what you would purchase at a retail establishment. We will put the $$$ toward the purchase of more of these items.

We are still trying to figure out an alternative for fabric with the loss of Joann’s. I found that Hobby Lobby has a larger selection of fleece than previously and on alternate weeks they have their yarn at 30% off and then the next week it is the fabric with the discount.
