Third Quarter Newsletter, September 2019
CHAPTER COORDINATOR’S MESSAGE
The WNC Project Linus Chapter has been so fortunate to have each of you as part of our wonderful organization. I am sure that you are aware of how we have grown over the years and because of this how we have been able to impact the lives of so many more children. With this being said, we are looking for ways to streamline some of our operations. This is one of the reasons for the following:
As was stated in the last newsletter there are going to be major changes in the way that we issue the newsletter and the in-kind receipts starting in 2020. I will be covering this again in the fourth quarter newsletter so that hopefully everyone will be informed. The first quarter newsletter for 2020, issued in April will be sent only electronically; therefore, there will be no in-kind-receipt sent. The fourth quarter newsletter will be sent in the mail and it will include a list of your yearly donations. If you do not have access to a computer, you will need to let me know and I will mail a copy of the newsletter to you. This isn’t a problem, but it is necessary for you to take the responsibility to let me know.
DULL SCISSORS/KNIVES
Terry Bozon of ISharpenit offers a sharpening service. He will be at 5 Little Monkeys Quilt and Sew located at 32 North Main Street Weaverville on Saturday, October 19th from 10-11:30. Here is an opportunity to get those scissors back in good working condition and if you discreetly let him know you are with Project Linus, you will love the price.
BOOKS FOR GOOD
Books for Good, located at 5 Heritage Park Drive in Fletcher, will be holding their annual holiday sale the weekend following Thanksgiving, Friday November 29th from 10-5 and Saturday 30th from 10-2. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts. The bookstore has been so gracious to Project Linus and so many other non-profits in our area. They take our donated books and once they are sold, at very reasonable prices, they share the sale price with the non-profit. To date our Chapter has received over $4,000.00 from them and has you can imagine this is a significant help with our expenses. Please pay them a visit and help spread the word.
WEIGHTED BLANKETS
Our Chapter has crossed the threshold of 1,200 weighted blankets delivered to children who are struggling with sensory issues. The added weight of the blanket has a calming effect, allowing these kids to settle down and to sleep, making a big difference in their quality of life. If making one of these blankets interests you, I can send you the pattern and the Velcro that is used to close the channels that holds the weighted material. With school back in session the requests have been soaring. This past quarter 65 were given out which depleted our inventory.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
In September Jane Gump and I had the privilege of going to Lake Junaluska, a Methodist Conference Center in Haywood County. There was a woman’s retreat being held and Saturday afternoon was spent on community service projects. Project Linus was invited to come and show the ladies how to make the no sew fleece blankets. A good time was had by all and Jane and I left with 21 blankets. If you hear of an opportunity to spread the PL word do let me know.
FABRIC CHOICE
This is to request a special favor, please consider the pattern of your fabric or fleece when you chose to make a blanket. Many children are in a comprised position and something like skeletons on a blanket might not be the most comforting choice. This is also true for the weighted blankets. These blanket “hugs” are hopefully being given with the thought that a child will hold on to this for comfort, peace, and security for many years to come. Therefore, a holiday themed design, such as Christmas doesn’t make much sense since it is to be used all year long.
DROP-OFF LOCATION
We have added an additional drop-off location in Henderson County. Sheridan Kay Quilting, a longarm quilting studio located at 1680 Spartanburg Highway. Stop in to say hi and let them know how much we appreciate them helping Project Linus.
